German botanical illustration

I'd never heard her name before until today's Google doodle. But what beautiful illustrations! And isn't it interesting how many Germans are into botany? Hmm. Is there some obvious reason I'm unaware of?

And this is the illustrator herself...Maria Sibylla Merian (2 April 1647 – 13 January 1717).

  1. I know, so gorgeous. I'd never heard of her either. I'm obsessed with Mrs. Delany at the moment (reading her bio, looking at her art, wishing I had the Sybil Connelly-designed Tiffany china inspired by her.
